THE GOOD BREAST

my poem takes the idea of the earth mother’s relation to the universe. it is a feeding relation. the mother feeds and nurtures the world and replaces harm with positive forces. it is a relationship that echoes in all things in nature. i wrote something on similar lines in my sonnet ‘the good feed’. it starts ‘the brain does not create consciousness/which can, therefore, survive death’.

i am very influenced in my poetry by the ideas of the analyst melanie klein, who wrote about the crucial relation between the mother and the baby. it places the woman at the centre of things.
